Who, me?

#9 in a series of reflections by the author

When designing, one of the values expressed to the architect by the parish was the rural, farm-like qualities of the surrounding area. The new church--in the distance--is  between the tree and the right edge of the picture).  (circa 2002)

David J Kennebeck, october 19, 2022

When  I began researching The Pivotal Pastor, I built a list of people to interview. Though I was a parishioner at the time of the events I write about, I wanted other people's perspectives as a way to help inform the story. It didn't matter what they thought of Ron Lewinski; their story was what mattered.

I heard from dozens of people. Whether their comments are short or long, I value them for the perspectives they offer.

I  also consider myself blessed to have made new acquaintances. I met Sr. Elaine Marie Kluciewicz, Lewinski's second and third-grade teacher. She had insights into his character even as a youngster that would remain traits throughout his life. Often, Lewinski credited her and another nun for being positive influences on him. The other nun is Sr.  Agnes Cunningham. She was one of the first women hired to teach at a  major seminary (Mundelein) in the late 1960s. She's a wonderful  99-year-young soul.

My conversations have included current and former parishioners, Lewinski's classmates (grade school through seminary), co-workers, peers, and superiors. While my story is not a biography, the insights provided by these people give a better profile of Ron Lewinski over his lifetime. Characteristics that many people attribute to Lewinski are intelligence, humility, introversion, a good sense of humor, and zeal.

That doesn't mean everyone liked him or that he didn't have "negative" traits. He encountered his share of conflict, just as we all do. I simply choose not to cast stones.

In my first reflection, I mentioned that you might be in my story. Most people I've chatted with know whether I'm quoting them. Besides Lohan, Lewinski, and the staff he hired, dozens of people were part of that project. There are also people who were involved with the project that I have not quoted but are named in the book. Many people contributed in some way, and they became part of history.

To the best of my knowledge, I've notified everyone I've named in The Pivotal Pastor. If you were on staff at St. Mary's or chaired one of the Planning Commission's subcommittees, then you are probably named (perhaps more than once). If I spoke or communicated with you and I didn't include you, don't feel bad: I have a 'Plan B.'

Next time, I'll touch briefly on some of the more lighthearted aspects of the story and Lewinski. Things like Guido, marijuana, and drive-through confessionals.

Send me your comments/questions.
