This collection of recipes from the author's ancestors is made unique by the inclusion of family photographs, some dating back to the 1800's. Some favorite treats the author recalls enjoying during childhood include Sour Cream Pie (not at all sour), Food For the Gods, Corn Relish, and Divinity Candy. This book is worth a look if you want to prepare something new for a birthday or holiday, or just want a glimpse into life during the 20th century.
The author is from a family of immigrants who established farmsteads on the prairies of northern Illinois in the mid-1800s. Some of his best childhood memories include his mother's cooking and weekend visits with relatives. Usually, the two were combined. A barn silo, the iconic symbol of a dairy farm, originated in his ancestor's hometown, and there were nearly half a million across the United States when the author was born.
This book was published to commemorate his parent's 100th wedding anniversary (father born 1896 and mother born 1902) and to honor the generations that witnessed two World Wars, the Great Depression, and the Korean and Vietnam conflicts.
